“Stop Telling Me to Relax”: The Emotions and Fertility
Navigating emotions and fertility issues with fertility acupuncture Surrey or fertility hypnotherapy Nationwide…
If you’ve ever been told to just relax and it will happen, I’m sure you know the full raft of emotions this can stir up. Because you already know that. You are trying to relax. And the anxiety, the worry, the heartache, the frustration – they don’t simply go away because someone points out that they should.
What makes it harder still is that you probably also know stress – and the other emotions which also create a stress response – affects fertility. That it disrupts hormones, interferes with ovulation, impacts receptivity, and compounds the very thing you’re trying to resolve.
But knowing it doesn’t help. In fact, it makes things worse. Now you’re stressed about being stressed. Anxious about your anxiety. Grieving, and worrying that the grief itself is part of the problem.
There’s something deeper happening too – something that Five Element acupuncture understands that most fertility advice doesn’t even touch. These sustained emotions don’t just create a physiological stress response. They also deplete and imbalance the organ systems connected to each element. And those imbalances, in turn, generate more of the same emotion and deplete us on every level.
This is the vicious cycle of the emotions and fertility – and why being told to relax, or even knowing you should, can never be enough.
The Five Elements: A Map of Your Emotional Landscape
In both Traditional Chinese Medicine emotions aren’t separate from physical health, they’re intimately bound up with it. Five Element acupuncture places particular importance on this and is a wonderful system for transforming and releasing on every level (I’m trained in both TCM acupuncture and Five Element acupuncture). Each of the five Elements – Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water – is associated with specific organ systems (Officials) and together there influence our emotional state, our mental and physiological functions, even our spirit (the bigger picture stuff).
Every Element and Official has a healthy, vital expression – its gifts when things are in balance. They also cause symptoms when under strain, not only physical and mental symptoms, but also in the emotions. There can be an excess of the associated emotion, or the opposite: a flatness, a numbness, a resignation. Both are signs that the Element needs support. The fertility journey has a way of moving people through both.

Wood Element – The Visionary: Growth, Direction, and Flexible Action
Wood is the energy of vision, movement and direction. When the Wood Element is healthy, we feel hopeful and purposeful – we can see where we’re going, make plans, adapt when things change, and keep moving forward. Its gifts are assertiveness, flexibility, decisiveness and hope.
When Wood is under strain, that forward energy either gets blocked, spinning on the spot, exploding out or fading away. You might notice its explosive side: rage at the unfairness of watching others fall pregnant effortlessly while you struggle, frustration at the well-meaning comments, short-temperedness with your partner, resentment of other people’s pregnancies, a rigidity that makes it hard to cope with the changing life plans or uncertain IVF schedules. But the flip side can also be true: the apathy and resignation that can set in, the quiet loss of hope, the indecisiveness, the feeling of being completely stuck with no sense of how to move forward. Both are Wood under strain. Both matter.
With my Fertility Acupuncture Surrey, we work to soothe and move Liver Qi – encouraging flow, easing held tension, restoring hormonal and menstrual balance. Emotionally, harmonising the spirit of Wood means helping anger find its healthier expression as clarity and purposeful action, restoring flexibility and vision, and, importantly, bringing hope back.
Fire Element – Radiant Heart: Connection, Joy, and Loving Warmth
Fire is the energy of warmth, connection and joy. When the Fire Element is healthy, there is ease in relationships, a capacity for pleasure and playfulness, and an ability to feel genuinely loved and loving. Its gifts are compassion, passion, warmth and the ability to truly connect.
When Fire is under strain, that warmth either becomes frantic and overwhelming, or fades and goes quiet – anxiety spiralling around test results or the two-week wait, a racing mind that won’t settle, emotional overwhelm, intimacy becoming strained or purely functional. But the flip side can also be true: joy going flat, emotional numbness even with people you care about, a withdrawal from connection because it’s started to feel like too much effort. Both are Fire under strain. Both deserve attention.
With Five Element fertility acupuncture treatment, along with optimising the physical body, we work to nourish and settle the Fire Officials – calming the nervous system and moving the body from defence to flourish (vital for pregnancy). Emotionally, harmonising the spirit of Fire means helping calm, warmth, steadiness and real joy become accessible again, even in the middle of a hard journey.

Earth Element – The Nurturer: Grounding, Nourishment, and Harmonious Flow
Earth is the energy of nourishment, stability and groundedness. When the Earth Element is healthy, there is a sense of being settled and cared for – a trust in the goodness of life and in your own capacity to receive support. Its gifts are empathy, stability, the ability to nourish others and, crucially, yourself (and of course, an embryo).
When Earth is under strain, worry fills the space that trust used to occupy – hours on fertility forums, the compulsion to do everything perfectly, a constant background hum of anxiety that’s almost impossible to switch off, giving so much to managing the process that genuine self-nourishment has quietly stopped. But the flip side can also be true: a flatness and emptiness, going through the motions without feeling fed by any of it, an inability to receive care even when it’s offered, feeling ungrounded and unsupported. Both are Earth under strain. Both are worth addressing.
We’ll work to strengthen the Spleen and Stomach Officials of Earth – helping the body and mind feel genuinely resourced. Emotionally, harmonising the spirit of Earth means moving from chronic worry and endless pushing into a quieter trust – in the body, in the process, and in your own capacity to know what you need.
Metal Element – The Purifier: Clarity, Quality, and Releasing
Metal is the energy of quality, self-worth and the capacity for renewal. When the Metal Element is healthy, there is a deep sense of one’s own value, an ability to release what has passed, and an openness to what might still be possible. Its gifts are integrity, the ability to let go, and an openness to inspiration and renewal.
When Metal is under strain, grief can accumulate and become heavy – or go underground and become numbness. You might recognise the weight of it: profound grief after miscarriage, or failed IVF cycles, for the life imagined that feels like it’s slipping away, a persistent sense that your body is failing you, shame about feelings you think you shouldn’t have. But the flip side can also be true: an inability to grieve at all, a strange detachment from what’s happening, a flat resignation that isn’t quite sadness but isn’t okay either. Both are Metal under strain. Both need space.
With Five Element acupuncture treatment, we support and restore the Lung and Large Intestine Official. In terms of emotions, that means creating space to sit with the tough stuff, to release what isn’t serving, and to take in quality and clarity anew. This is careful, gentle work. Emotionally, harmonising the spirit of Metal means helping grief move rather than accumulate, quietly restoring a sense of self-worth, and opening the door to the precious gifts around you.
Water Element – The Sage: Stillness, Wisdom, and Deep Flow
Water is the energy of deep reserves, wisdom and will. When the Water Element is healthy, there is a quiet courage – an ability to face uncertainty without being overwhelmed by it, and a trust in the flow of life. Its gifts are wisdom, willpower, adaptability and a deep, sustaining vitality.
When Water is under strain, fear takes hold and the will begins to falter – a constant undercurrent of dread about time running out, catastrophic thinking, high anxiety that has become background noise, a sense of bracing for whatever comes next. But the flip side can also be true: not fear but its absence – an apathy and loss of will, an exhaustion so deep that sleep doesn’t touch it, a quiet shutdown, the energy and drive that used to be there simply gone. Both are Water under strain. Both point to the same depletion.
We’ll nourish and rebuild the Water Element, helping to conserve those deep reserves. Emotionally, harmonising the spirit of Water means helping fear give way to a quiet courage, reconnecting with innate inner wisdom, and bringing back that steely determination to keep going, one step at a time.

So What Can Actually Help?
The advice to relax isn’t wrong, exactly. It’s just completely unhelpful, because the parts of the body and brain driving this response aren’t under your conscious control. You can’t think your way out of a stress response. You can’t decide to stop being afraid. It doesn’t work like that.
This is where fertility acupuncture Surrey – and for those of you beyond commuting distance to my acupuncture clinic in Haslemere, my fertility hypnotherapy – offer something genuinely different. Not another relaxation technique to add to the list, not something else to try harder at. Both work with the parts of our body and mind that conscious effort simply cannot reach.
Fertility acupuncture regulates the system at a physiological level, calming the stress response, supporting hormonal balance and optimising the fertility cycle. It can shift the body out of a state of vigilance and into one of safety and receptivity – vital for successful conception. And because I’m trained in both TCM and Five Element acupuncture, it can also help to transform and release the difficult emotions contributing to this vicious cycle, working on body, mind and spirit together.
My specialist fertility hypnotherapy works at the level of the non-conscious mind, where deeply held emotions and patterns of thinking have taken up residence. It can reach them, transform them and release them where you can’t reach them yourself. And because of my fertility acupuncture expertise, I can also guide you through hypnosis sessions that touch into the wisdom of Chinese medicine – helping your body access its own healing even away from the acupuncture needles.
Neither of these things asks you to try harder. They’re not telling you that this is your fault, or that you have to somehow magic Zen-like calm when everything is screaming that there’s a problem. They work with the parts of you that are beyond trying.
